Neutralizing Pollutants: Beeswax candles produce negative ions when burned, and those ions help to neutralize pollutants in the air. This helps eliminate dust, odors, and mold in the atmosphere, easing allergy and asthma symptoms and improving breathing for anyone nearby.
I absolutely love hand-dipping candles. It's so cathartic. I get my beeswax from the Bruce Peninsula, ensuring an unadulterated, pesticide free wax. Bee's travel great distances to find a flower nectar, and sadly corn and canola growers in Ontario are still permitted to spray pesticides, which drift in the air and contaminate fields that our little bee friends collect pollen from to feed their hive. I've specifically chosen wax, honey, comb, propolis and bee pollen from way up north, on the Bruce Peninsula, because the terrain is so rocky, corn can't grow there. The little pollinators are safe up there, and the goodies they produce are safe too!
Did you know that most beeswax you purchase has been filtered repeatedly, so it's great for 'the' perfect candle, but pretty non-beneficial for anything else?
Filtering is fine I suppose, if you're looking for a bright coloured (white to yellow) wax, but filtering removes all of the beneficial remnants from the wax, remnants of the flowers, remnants of the bees. I guess it really depends on your preference, and I personally prefer rustic and non-processed.
I purposefully use unfiltered wax in both my personal care products and my candle making, because the health benefits are plentiful. For example, did you know that melting unfiltered beeswax can help alleviate seasonal allergies, most significantly for those of us who suffer ragweed, dust and pollen allergies? It also has a slight honey scent, then when inhaled, slowly and deeply, promotes a very calming effect and an overall feeling of relaxation and well-being.
Beeswax candles are reputed to have several health benefits, including…
Lower Toxicity:
Because beeswax candles are all natural, they do not produce toxic by-products and heavy soot when burned. Some types of candles produce traces of chemicals known to be carcinogenic, but this isn't a concern with beeswax candles.
Neutralizing Pollutants: Beeswax candles produce negative ions when burned, and those ions help to neutralize pollutants in the air. This helps eliminate dust, odors, and mold in the atmosphere, easing allergy and asthma symptoms and improving breathing for anyone nearby.
Relaxation: The simple act of burning a candle has relaxing properties and can aid in stress relief and meditation. The mildly sweet, natural honey scent of beeswax candles can aid that relaxation without being overwhelming as artificially scented candles can become.
Safety: Because beeswax candles are all natural and produce no byproducts, they are naturally dripless when used properly and are thus safer to burn. This avoids the risk of burns and other injuries that can result from burning other types of candles improperly.
Light: Beeswax candles have the brightest, purest light of any candles and are closest to natural sunlight. If the candles are to be used as a light source, this can help minimize eye strain and reduce headaches.
We can thank the bees for all of their hard work 🐝
